ISA SUP & Paddleboard World Championships – Day 4-7 – Copenhagen, Denmark

September 2024

Days:     1&2     3     4-7

Days 4 & 5
Thursday and Friday turned out to be rest days for Team Scotland, as we didn’t have a female proner for Thursday’s team relays.

Day 6
Søren Kirkegaards Plads in the centre of Copenhagen was to be the venue for the weekend’s events. The first of these being the Copenhagen SUP mass participation event, where Rho and I were joined by 500 of our closest friends for a paddle. Courses ranged from 2.5 to 9km, and we chose to do the latter. (This was made possible thanks to the wonderful Vincens family who looked after Molly that morning.)
In the afternoon it was back to the World Championships, for the “distance” event, (13.5km). The women went first, at the hottest part of the day, with Alison and Angela representing Scotland. Part of the way around the course they decided to take turns drafting each other and held hands as they crossed the finish line.
Glen and Jonathan went next, with Glen taking an early lead. And, although Jonathan closed the gap to just a few metres behind Glen, they were just too far apart to cross the line hand in hand.
An outstanding effort by all 4 paddlers.

Day 7
The final day of racing was the sprints, over a 200m course with a tight buoy turn at the halfway point.
Jonathan and Jen represented Scotland. Considering there were only 3-4 racers in each heat, the paddlers put in so much power, that it looked like a bloomin’ big boat had come through, creating a massive wake. Staying on the board was a challenge in itself! Jen and Jonathan did a fantastic job!
The last race of the day was the para SUP event, were wheelchair users were paired up with professional paddlers and did a relay on the sprint course. Truly inspirational. We even got a quick chat with the awesome para-athlete Stinna Tange, (pictured in action). Quite a lady!
We also caught up again with our new Argentinian friend Daniela Spais, before setting off on our 48 hour drive home.
Thanks again to the Vincens – Christian, Agness, Leah, and Astrid for looking after Molly. You guys were wonderful!!
Also thanks to Rho, Scott, Jen, and the others who kept me on course during the mass paddle. Very much appreciated!
