Prone – Tayport, Scotland.

May 2019

Today we were on the south side of the Tay estuary, in the Kingdom of Fife, where the water was a bit lumpier than last week, and I had my first go at prone surfing.
I was out with Piotr of Outdoor Explore again, and we were joined by Simon of Ecocamp Glenshee and Stuart, who were wanting to brush up their sea kayaking skills.
Piotr had warned me that this was not going to be a long distance paddle, but was more a case of experiencing rougher conditions, and working hard. With a north easterly wind coming in at 12mph, with gusts of 20, and sea conditions of force 3, and the occasional white topped wave, he wasn’t wrong!
This was definitely my hardest 2 hour prone session yet.
On the last section, we paddled out from the harbour and rode the waves on the incoming tide for 2 minutes. It then took almost 15 minutes to get back to the harbour. Piotr did offer a tow, but I couldn’t do that, well, not this time anyway!
